Congratulations on deciding to get your first tattoo! You undoubtedly have a lot of questions before the ink touches your skin, but you may alleviate your fear and confusion by following these steps:
Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind before and after your tattoo appointment:
DO:
- Research and choose a reputable and experienced tattoo artist who uses sterile equipment and follows proper safety protocols.
- Choose a design that you are passionate about and that has personal meaning to you.
- Communicate clearly with your tattoo artist about your design and any concerns or questions you may have.
- Get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy meal before your appointment.
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area where you will be getting tattooed.
- Stay still and follow your tattoo artist’s instructions during the process to ensure the best results.
- Follow your tattoo artist’s aftercare instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and prevent infection.
DON’T:
- Rush into getting a tattoo without doing proper research and planning.
- Choose a design simply because it’s trendy or popular at the moment.
- Drink alcohol or take drugs before your appointment, as they can thin your blood and make the process more difficult and painful.
- Hesitate to speak up if you are uncomfortable or in pain during the process.
- Touch or scratch your tattoo while it is healing, as this can introduce bacteria and prolong the healing process.
- Expose your tattoo to direct sunlight, chlorinated or saltwater, or tight clothing during the healing process.
- Pick or peel any scabs that may form on your tattoo, as this can cause scarring and damage to the design.
